    History of Yoga

I am not a history buff by any means but Rachel presented this section in such a fun and inspiring way that I actually really enjoyed it. I also understand how knowing a little about the history of yoga really gives a teacher (or practitioner) a much clearer view of the different styles and different commercializations of some of the styles.

    History of Yoga

Very well taught, digestible and intriguing. I want to learn more. Rachel provided a strong and compelling introduction to these various ages- Vedic, Upanishads, ,The Epic Stories and through to Modern yoga. Total bonus to get this kind of education in YTT. Definitely interested in learning more.

The best journey into Yoga History!

I have completed 3 x 200 hour Yoga Teacher Trainings and not one of them explained the history of yoga in such detail and understanding way like this course! It was mind-blowing. I absolutely loved learning about the history of Yoga and can not wait to share all that I have learned with my students. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    What a story!

I was enthralled through this beautifully illustrated and narrated story of yoga: format-wise loved the consistency of lay-out for each lesson allowing me to flow through the ages, and the "in other news" was a welcome addition.

Deep, rich history is embedded in the practice of yoga

Although I understood that yoga has a long history in India, this overview of yoga history revealed just how deep and rich that history is. When I think about yoga now, I can see how this is embedded in the modern form we practice. Thank you for this important part of a holistic yoga teacher training!

    Bravo Rachel

Terrific overview. A huge topic to organize and explain successfully, but Rachel did it. She is unbelievably effective at conveying some very subtle concepts together with historical facts. This one course alone is worth the price of admission.

I like Rachel's relaxed approach to teaching. She's respectful and fun. I imagine some teachers of yoga might take themselves more seriously than they need to. Rachel made the information accessible and interesting. Thanks so much!!!

    Yoga History

This was so well done in terms of capturing yoga's location within the world community and its different developmental stages I appreciate so much the information that nested it in time, space and politics of the different times with simple statements of what was happening and the images that we often see but have not referenced with yoga history before. Great overview.

    How yesterday informs today

This course showed me the roots of yoga, how it has evolved from a philosophy into both meditation and action. I began to explore the why of yoga, when previously I only knew the how.

    Fantastic Overview of Yoga History!

I really enjoyed this overview. Although it didn't go into great depth, it was a great jumping off point. Rachel is an amazing instructor - not only is she knowledgeable, but her presentation is excellent, and she seems like the kind of person you'd just want to sit down and hang out with - so personable and approachable. The course is well thought-out, and I love how each section not only builds on the previous material, but also frequently repeats and reviews the information so the student can gain a thorough understanding. I'm looking forward to my next course and would definitely recommend this one to anyone interested in an introduction to yoga philosophies.

    Yoga History course review

The quality of the videos and other material was excellent, but the quantity was somewhat insufficient. There were 43 videos for a total of 71 minutes and 49 seconds; the average video length was only 1 minute and 40 seconds, so the total and average length seem too short. There was a 10 page handout which could have been longer and supplied more information and references for further reading.

While short and sweet, such a thorough overview!

I can appreciate how much work it must have been to put together such a great outlined summary of this vast history! I really enjoyed this. I am so inspired to learn more about the philosophical contributions these ages have provided to our modern practice. Also recently with ‘International Yoga Day’ just passing, I saw many Instagram posts about the colonization of yoga and understood only based on what people posted / wrote in captions or comments about this idea. I have a better grasp now after this ‘overview of yoga history’ of how important it is to educate ourselves continuously as teachers about this tradition and that we really need to work to represent it authentically and work towards not appropriating it out of ignorance. Thank you for this and thank you for offering this during the summer to us members! So grateful!

What a Breathtaking Review of Yoga History

One of my goals for taking teacher training is to learn more about the history of yoga, and to understand better the people and ideas that have created this rich and ancient tradition. This overview really covers the grand sweep of history and how the yoga tradition fits in. Rachel keeps it interesting and relevant. She builds a framework that will help me and others understand and place in context the great cast of characters and stories through the ages.

    The Epic Stories

I learned about the three accessible Yogas. It is fascinating. But more importantly, the journaling is helping me with my current dilemma. The journaling also helps me remember what I’m learning in the lesson. One more thing, Dharma. I did not know what that word meant, now I know, and I’ll be continuing to reflect on my life’s purpose.

    Vedas section a bit problematic

Overall I am loving the program. I want say that that the section on the Vedas tweaked me a bit. I think there are aspects to that section that indicate a cultural blindspot. I think it could benefit from a review to make sure that it is coming across as intended. Other than that, I am really enjoying the training!
