112: Anatomy Of The Hip

Yoga is a very special practice because - unlike our usual movements of walking, sitting, or running - it provides opportunities to mobilize the hip all directions. However, every hip is different, and understanding the anatomy of this important joint will help you to more skillfully support your students in their alignment and asana practice.

Note for CE Credits: If you are a current teacher taking this course for Yoga Alliance CE credits, you may submit for 3 hours of Anatomy and Physiology credit via the Yoga Alliance website.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the general anatomy and the structure of the hip.

  • Demonstrate how the shape of your hip joint will affect movement and asana practice.

  • Identify poses that stretch and strengthen the muscle groups surrounding the hip: flexors, extensors, adductors, abductors, and rotators.

Loved the way you had us all palpating the bones in different postures and appreciating how different individual skeletal structures are. You provided a whole new appreciation of the complexity of the hip muscles and a lightbulb moment for me over the role of the hip abductors in balancing poses. Thank-you!

This was a great lesson on teaching (and reviewing) hip muscles and anatomy. It makes me really think about what is going on in different poses. Hopefully one day it will be more natural and not something to analyse each time.

On this course Rachel takes you on an exciting exploration of the hip. She explains with mastery and clarity the anatomical elements of this fundamental part of our body: bones, muscles, joints, connective tissue and how they work together to help us move around! This course will give you important insights on how to take care of this area of the body, how to move with precision and to preserve your hips functionality in the long run (literally).
